Call for Volunteers for Chemistry’s Past and Your Future
The event, on March 17, 2010, is designed to introduce high-school students to career options in chemistry. This program is particularly targeted towards young women, a demographic traditionally under-represented in science careers. Volunteer professionals in science careers will engage students through presentations and informal group discussions, detailing their experiences and the path that led them to their careers. We look to engage a myriad of science-related professions to represent the depth and breadth of career opportunities open to people with interest and abilities in science, from bench science to business to journalism to art. Are there some local people that you think would be a great person for the students to meet? I would prefer young, dynamic professionals with non-traditional careers based on chemistry.
The day will also include activities connected to the Museum at CHF, led by our staff of museum professionals. The museum focuses on chemistry’s history and profound influence on modern life, and the students will have the opportunity to explore how history has impacted the science of today and how innovations of today might resonate in the future by participating in a guided tour and activity. Finally, Dr. Katie Hunt of The Dow Chemical Company will present a lunchtime keynote address for all students.
Schools from economically disadvantaged schools are invited to bring up to 20 of your students to this event. There are two sessions from which you can choose (pending availability): the morning session runs from 9:15 am – 12:30 pm; the afternoon session runs from 11:15 am – 2:30 pm. All students will attend lunch at the same time, from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm. We hope to have ~ 140 students attending the day.
We are asking volunteers to join us for either the morning or the afternoon. In order to make this event accessible to as many students as possible, there is no charge for any of the activities. Boxed lunches will be provided to all students, chaperones, and volunteers.
This program is presented in partnership with the American Chemical Society Philadelphia Section Women Chemists Committee. Funding has been provided by the National Girls Collaborative Project and GlaxoSmithKline.

Discover the Future, A Science and Math Extravaganza For Students in Grades 5 to 7
The AAUW Lansdale Branch of the American Association of University Women has a Math and Science program aimed at encouraging girls in grades 5-7 to enter into these fields of study, although all students are invited. The program is called Discover the Future, A Science and Math Extravaganza For Students in Grades 5 to 7 and the Lansdale AAUW has offered this program to students in the North Penn School District since 1993. This year, it will take place on March 20, 2010. In addition to the school district, our sponsors include a major pharmaceutical company, local businesses and community groups. The program is designed for 125 students per year. Keynote speakers for this program have included a woman astronaut, oceanographer, meteorologist, and archeologist. In addition to the keynote, students participate in hands-on workshops presented by a variety of area women scientists, mathematicians and medical professionals. Workshop presenters have included a civil engineer, archeologist, pilot, computer specialist, medical technologist, horticulturist, and so on. The students also have free time in an Exploration and Discovery Room, with math and science games, activities, and puzzles. The goals of this program are to make math and science interesting and to help the students realize the value of math and science in their lives. Discover the Future provides real life role models. By interacting with these "women in action" we want to encourage the students to recognize that they too can enjoy, and be successful in the math and science professions.
We need your expertise!!
Please read this letter which gives information about the program, and email Lee Wolfe if you or someone in your organization would like to participate in this year's program. We really hope you consider this opportunity to impact the lives of 5th, 6th and 7th grade girls and boys a great and worthwhile one. Please consider enriching our program with your talents.
